05-Roller Coaster Lab

Assignment:

You are to build a roller coaster for a marble (the car) out of the supplies in the classroom.  Your roller coaster will include hills, loops, spirals, and differing lengths of track.  
There will not be a paper based assignment.  Your grade for this lab will be determined by your responses to verbal questions and observations. 

Objective:

Build a coaster that safely converts gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy and vice versa.  

Supplies needed:
  • One pipe insulator cut in half
  • One paper Cup
  • One Marble (or many if you loose them)
  • Masking Tape

Your task:

complete each of the trials below. Each Trial should end with the marble landing safely in a paper cup on its side.  If the marble hits the paper cup too hard causing it to move, your roller coaster will be classified as "unsafe" and must be build again.

1) Make a roller coaster with one hill.
2) Make a roller coaster with one loop.
3) Make a roller coaster with one spiral.
4) Make a roller coaster with one loop and one hill

Join with another group to complete steps 5-7

5)  Make a roller coaster with one loop, one hill, and one spiral.
6)  Make a roller coaster with two hills, one loop, and one spiral.
7)  Make a roller coaster with two hills, two loops, and a spiral.
